2. Michelle Clarke: TedX talk on Digital footprints
Watch this video:
3. Takeaways from the video
Pause and think
Write down 3 issues this video raises that you think are important
Post these on the FORUM topic: Digital footprint takeaways.
Read someone else’s post on the topic
Comment on which issues were similar to yours and which were different
4. Some of the takeaways we noticed were
Privacy issues
Business have access to your private information (would a potential employer employ you after looking at your Facebook page – what about those photos of you on your friends Facebook page)
Once online information is up – it’s always up
Accessible (non-deletable) history of you
Hard to keep a secret once information about you is online
How does/could what you post impact your dreams
Identity theft and identity manipulation
Vulnerability to online trolls
Online “mob” shamming
Young people (particularly girls) experimenting with self -commodification
5. Digital footprints and personal learning networks (PLN)
6. Activity: Investigate your own Digital Footprint, your PLN, and Take Control
Using a framework similar (to Meadon’s) investigate:
“What does Google say about you”
AND/BUT think about
“What do you want Google to say about you”
7. Draw a picture of your own PLN
You could use paper and pens to develop a PLN (similar to that of the WITS and/or UJ student Liana showed as an example). Take a picture with a cell phone camera to upload to the Forum
Draw this in Word or on a PowerPoint slide
Use free and open source software to create a mind-map or concept map of your PLN. Refer to our How to Guide: GitMind
8. Share your PLN
Go to Forum 2: Sharing your PLN
Upload a picture/ attachment of your PLN
What does your digital self say about you? Is there consistency or difference across the different spheres of your life. Have you made conscious choices about who you interact with online and how? How might others see you online? What do you think about your digital footprint
9. Synchronous Discussion: Facilitating the development of healthy digital identities in others
So, given what we now know, as digital education leaders how do we ensure that other leaders – students, policymakers, facilitators, teachers, and so on - develop the capacity to both ‘develop and facilitate others’ in developing healthy digital identities?
