Week 1 Evaluating online information: Discussion

What are some of the issues and challenges with finding information online?

Do you have any concerns about the online platforms you use?

What about the trustworthiness of online information? How did you find the Fake news game? Was it easy to spot the fake? Did you do any checks to verify the information? Or did you just go with your gut feel?

Evaluating information online can be quite a daunting task..you need to be inquisitive, critical,  and default on mistrust. In this first activity, I enjoyed reading through your posts and made a quick note of how each of you have responded to this activity.

·         Edna’s first post about her learning experience of fact checking showed how intricate and seep spiraling it can be to do research on False news spinners. Indeed, through Factitious, you can learn to spot the pointers which would help you to determine Real news from Fake ones

·         Richard described how he prefers information from particular websites like Webster.

·         Martin and Pauline point out that as teachers, it is their duty to ensure that the info he provides is valid and true and uses more scholarly journal sites. – Doing checks also help for reliability and validity of the info. Pauline and Anthony mention about cost of “verified information” compared to fake news which is freely available!

·         Victor uses his gut feeling..! And gets things right all the time.. Great one Victor! Thankfully Mariecia doesn’t agree with this method J..

·         Nyle and Shakira went to quite some lengths to find out about her DEL- me J - and very grateful for that.

·         Hubert;s post was quite interesting as he includes Add-ons to his browser to ensure safety of “the people he serves” Will need to explore this with him in today’s zoom session. Similarly ..Emiliano also has some cool search tips – using filetype extensions to get exactly what he is looking for. Not so easy sometimes.

·         Raul made a checklist of 7 things to do to verify information

·         Luisa hit on something important – our own role in the Fake News movement..and why the only way to spread fake news.. is in our hands…literally

·         Carlo points to some challenges of internet connection and automatic syncing of information when the internet is restored.

·         Jeavon seems to use Facebook for professional references.. interesting..

·         Olivia!! Very diplomatic

·         Shirly had some trouble researching her DEL it seems..Will take this up with her today.

·         Marcel and Arjenis all seems well J

·         Selwyn on the other hand.. points to very annoying advertising campaigns.. and this can be quite worrisome looking at the way information is gathered , then fed to companies who do their business in datamining and targeting.
