Learning Activity 2: Experiment with Facebook

Identify some friends who are willing to engage with you on Facebook. It will be better if all participants are in different locations. Different countries will be better.

You are going to visit the following Facebook page:

You can even follow this page to get updates. It is also interesting to read about the owner of this page, how he moved from being a scientist to science reporter and also to get a grasp of how to make money comfortably on social network.

Videos and post are regularly updated on this page. So, all participant must agree on what video to watch. We must also agree on the time and day to conduct the experiment.

Right now I am watching the following video about Artificial photosynthesis: https://www.facebook.com/ScienceNaturePage/videos/1339839422814979/

I get an advert at 1:05 about a local optics shop and mother’s day. This ad displays for about 10 seconds.

Once you are ready, you can answer the following questions:

  1. Have you come across an advert during your video?

  2. What is the ad about? Which product, company, location?

  3. How much time did the ad last? After how many seconds could you skip it?

  4. Compare the results with the other participants. Are your results related to your location? Are the results related to the day? Do they appear at the same time in the video? Are they of the same length?

You can repeat similar experiments on YouTube or other social networks. The YouTube channel is at https://www.youtube.com/user/hashemalghaili/

Work out the above questions in a word document and upload on the platform.
