Evaluating Online Information

Some issues and challenges when searching for online information:

  • How to search or navigate to search whatever we need appropriately. (how to type the exact word, phrase, keywords, etc.)
  • How to know which websites have genuine information and which websites have false or misleading information.
  • Limited information on the topic that you are searching for.
  • Subscribing/registering to a website, sometimes free(limited) or paying to have access to a resource example e-book, pdf file, etc.

Concerns about the online platform I use:

  • Is my data (registration data) and resources (pdfs, videos, powerpoints) posted being or going to be used or shared with third parties?

We are all infovores: getting the right information is central to our lives. Getting the right and most accurate information is even of greater importance. With the explosion in citizens’ information creation and distribution and the rise of fake news, we all need to verify all information before we pass/share it with other people.

  • Read Widely (from Different Sources)
  • Examine Information Critically
  • Look for What Motivate the Writer of the Information You Are Reading
  • Examining the information objectively and critically.
  • Getting to know who the sponsor(s) of the information is (or are).
  • Check the Date/Timestamp
  • Check the Source (Bibliography) of the information.
