It is surprising what information you can find about a person online. Some social media sites like Facebook and Instagram do offer users the ability to hide personal information from people not on your friends list, but persons can still make inferences from the types of pictures you have open to the public on these sites. Sites like linked-in, which is more geared towards networking, does allow the user to share more of their professional development and attributes. This activity has made me become more aware that the information you or others share about you on the internet really does stay in cyberspace for a long time. We as educators need to be cognizant of this and teach our students to be wise about what they choose to share about themselves online.
